Wendy Summers grew up in southern
Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay region. Having
come from a family with a strong matriarchal tradition of hand crafting, it was
no surprise when Wendy entered a well known New York art school to study
sculpture. It was as a sculpting
student that Wendy discovered her passion for making pottery.
After receiving a bachelors of fine arts degree from Alfred University,
Wendy moved to West Virginia to pursue her graduate study in ceramics, and as
she put it, “to learn how to throw pots.”
At West Virginia University she concentrated on developing her throwing,
firing, and glazing techniques.
Since receiving a Masters degree
in 1993, Wendy has operated her own pottery studio and occasionally works part
time for a larger production pottery. Summer
Hollow Pottery is located in the beautiful rural hills of central West Virginia.
Wendy strives to bring forms,
textures, and color together in a way that is both aesthetically pleasing and
completely functional. The
graceful, fluid lines of her work are often reminiscent of the waters of the
Chesapeake Bay. Her forms remind
one that elegance and beauty are often more evident in simplicity than in
showiness.
Summer Hollow Pottery is marked
with functionalism, beauty, and quality craftsmanship. From the precisely turned lid handles to the whimsical curve
of a pigs ear, look closely and you will see that God truly is in the details.
