About the Artist Wendy Summers

Wendy Summers, the owner of Summer Hollow Pottery, makes handmade pottery. She grew up in southern Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay region. Having come from a family with a strong matriarchal tradition of handcrafting, it was no surprise when Wendy entered a well-known New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred to study sculpture and art. It was as a sculpting student that Wendy Summers discovered her passion for making pottery. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Alfred University, Wendy moved to West Virginia to pursue her graduate study in ceramics at West Virginia University, and as she put it, learn how to throw pots. At West Virginia University she concentrated on developing her throwing, firing, and glazing techniques.

Summer Hollow Pottery

Wendy has operated her own pottery studio for over 25 years. Summer Hollow Pottery is located in the beautiful rural hills of central West Virginia. Wendy is a Tamarack, Best of West Virginia craftsman, she has had her work featured in Martha Stewart Living Magazine, Gourmet Magazine, and Traveling West Virginia. Wendy strives to bring forms, textures, glazes, and clay together in a way that is both aesthetically pleasing and completely functional. The graceful, fluid lines of her work are often reminiscent of the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Wendy Summers’  forms remind one that elegance and beauty are often more evident in simplicity than in showiness. Summer Hollow Pottery is marked with functionalism, beauty, artistry, and quality craftsmanship. From the precisely turned lid handles to the whimsical curve of a pig’s ear, look closely and you will see that God truly is in the details.

Philosophy of Making Handmade Pottery

As a potter, I use skill and craftsmanship to make simple handmade pottery, such as bowls, mugs, pitcher, and so on…these objects are associated with the tasks of everyday living. They are useful and practical. Being useful and practical does not make something less important, it makes it more important that they bring someone pleasure as they carry on the tasks of everyday life. Studio potters will often make items like mugs, bowls, and jugs. These items are essential to me, and I love to work with these quintessential ceramic items. As an artist, I use creativity to enrich these familiar objects. My goal is to create distinctively artful pottery that is useful and beautiful. I hope that my pots will enhance the tasks of your everyday life. I make special kitchen pottery because every day is a special day! All of my pottery is unique and creative, and I take pains to make sure even the ‘lowliest’ mug possesses care in all its details; my unique pottery is specially created to be genuinely UNIQUE!
